  1. Doreen –

I enjoyed Sinners because it falls within the Adults Only genre, the same space my own books explore. As the title suggests, the stories exist in the tension between sexual pleasure and morality — two themes that society often struggles to allow to coexist.

In a world where conversations about sex and female sexuality are frequently silenced, judged, or stigmatized, Sarah Haluwa boldly enters that uncomfortable space. Her female characters challenge shame and societal expectations, making the label “Sinners” feel almost ironic when placed against the courage and honesty with which these women embrace their desires. While the book’s subject matter may attract criticism because of its taboo nature, approaching it with judgment takes away from the experience of engaging with the stories as art.

The main characters are women who are unapologetic about their choices. The book unfolds as an exploration and celebration of female sexual pleasure in its many forms. Some encounters leave the characters disappointed (though certainly not the readers) while others create moments of humour and surprise. Yet each experience remains as daring and provocative as the one before it.

Although the stories are fictional, they carry a sense of familiarity. They echo many conversations and experiences often shared on social media and in everyday life. Housewives, socialites, and commercial sex workers, despite their different backgrounds, find common ground in their pursuit of intimacy, desire, and sexual exploration.

Written in “Kenyanese”, a distinctive blend of English infused with Kenyan expressions and cultural flavour, the stories unfold naturally through a conversational style that feels familiar and accessible.

Ultimately, Sinners is a reminder that art often mirrors life. Through its bold exploration of desire, morality, and female sexuality, Sarah Haluwa’s work demonstrates how fiction can hold up a mirror to the realities society often prefers to keep hidden.
